A Word from the Rector

Dear Ones,

Welcome to the St. Peter’s of the Valley Episcopal Church website. This website may be your first contact with St. Peter’s and we hope we are fortunate to see you in person soon. St. Peter’s is a special place between Aspen and Glenwood Springs where we gather weekly to worship, serve and share our lives. We welcome you to join us!

Our members are from all stages and all walks of life. We have families and retired persons and everyone in between participating in the life of our church. We are an open and affirming congregation with members of many diverse views and we welcome all. We recognize the teaching of Jesus to love one another and we take seriously that teaching.

We offer outdoor worship during the summer months in our Garden Chapel. During the school year we offer two worship services each Sunday with a more traditional language Rite I communion service at 8 am and a more modern language Rite II at 10 am. We offer a wide range of service opportunities in the community as well as learning opportunities.

We are blessed to have a full-time priest and deacon who serve the congregation, and our lay leaders perform many important roles in the church. We would love to share our joy with you.  Let us know how we can help you on your spiritual journey.

Blessings and see you soon, W+

P.S. You may wonder what the + sign means at the end of my name—as a priest we sign our names with a cross which means we are blessing you—so feel blessed!

Meet Our Clergy

The Reverend E. Wendy Huber
Priest, Pastor and Sheepdog
revwend@gmail.com
Wendy was called to serve as St. Peter’s of the Valley’s priest-in-charge, on January 1, 2020 and joyfully called as our rector during the summer of 2021. She was ordained to the priesthood in 2012 in the Diocese of Texas and has served small family-sized churches since 2010. Most recently she served a three-church partnership in the Roaring Fork Valley. Her call to full-time ministry was preceded by a successful career as a private consultant, trainer, mediator, facilitator, and professor in negotiation, mediation, and conflict resolution among other subjects. Wendy loves trout fishing, skiing, laughter, knitting, cooking, creativity and spirituality, reading, gardening and spending time with her immediate family who all live in Colorado. She tells people she is spiritual and religious and believes church is a hospital for sinners, not a club for saints.

The Reverend Richard E. Paxton
Deacon
rpaxton519@gmail.com
The Rev. Richard Paxton is a vocational deacon. He and his wife, Cheri, have lived in Missouri Heights since 2016, on and off at first, and then permanently since July 2019, when he retired from his secular career in local media. Richard and Cheri are parents of four adult children who now live in New York, South Carolina, Oregon, and…Carbondale! Richard was ordained deacon in 2010, after years of discernment as an active lay minister. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Notre Dame and Stanford, respectively, and is a graduate of the School of Ministry in the Diocese of Kentucky. Richard likes to ski, hike, read, play with his dogs, and play backgammon and cribbage. He is a Life Master bridge player and is the director of the Aspen Bridge Club. Deacon Richard loves to preach the Gospel, engage in pastoral care, and lead others in the ministry of service to the poor, the sick, the weak, and the lonely.

Meet Our Staff

Jackie Amthor
Interim Church Administrator
Director of Communications
jackieamthor@cox.net
Jackie Amthor was a regular visitor at St. Peter’s for many years when she came to spend time with her son Mark Hamilton and his family (including Kim, Rex and Jack) who are all members of St. Peter’s. When she moved permanently to Carbondale in 2015 after living in the Washington, DC area for more than 50 years, she found the welcoming St. Peter’s family a natural fit. She served in a variety of roles in Virginia and Maryland as a lay leader in three different Episcopal parishes. She says, “no matter where I lived in DC, the Episcopal Church gave me important roots and kept me grounded.”

Rachel Rausch
Director of Music
rachelrausch@yahoo.com
Rachel was born and raised in Yorkshire, England, and studied music at college in London. She has been playing the piano since she was seven. She came to Colorado in 1993, met her future husband Steve, and never left!  Steve is a ski patroller and avalanche technician at Aspen Mountain, and they have a 17-year-old daughter, Eva who is a senior at Glenwood Springs High School. The family lives in Glenwood Springs with Rocky, their rescue dog. Rachel has been the church musician at St. Peter's since September 2014 and absolutely loves it.

Meet Our Vestry

  • Anne Blackwell | Senior Warden

I have been an Episcopalian for more than thirty years. I love the liturgy, the flow of the seasons, the altar set for communion, and the message of love, compassion, and respect. Lay Eucharistic Ministry, Altar Guild, Flower Guild, Bible Study, Contemplative Prayer, Retreats, Vestry, teaching Sunday School, and especially Outreach Programs have all become increasingly important to me through the years. St. Peter’s is a central part of my life. The congregation is extremely friendly, creative, fun, inclusive, and generous with their time, talents, and resources. Reverend Wendy, Deacon Richard, and retired priests Father Bill and Father Steve are true gifts to our church.

  • Louie Allenbach | Junior Warden

We moved to the Roaring Fork Valley about ten years ago and joined St. Peter’s shortly thereafter. We love St. Peter’s for the wonderful, warm, inclusive culture and the many members we have gotten to know who have become like extended family. We moved to Colorado to be grandparents when our first Colorado grandchild, Cleo, was born, and we are blessed to be close to family in this glorious part of the country. I grew up and was educated Catholic in the deep South, and my wife Kate and I moved around during my 23 years with Scott Paper. Kate is a cradle Episcopalian. We have been active in all the churches where we worshipped in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Mississippi, and Virginia. I have served as a lay leader in four different churches and have served on various committees and had roles including Finance, Evangelism, Greeters, and Sunday School teacher.

  • Jan Johnson | Clerk of Vestry

Jan Johnson is a lifelong Episcopalian and has held nearly every position except Altar Guild as she fears she may trip with wine in hand. She was co-warden for St. Peter’s when we were a mission. She currently serves as clerk of the vestry and treasurer of the Northwest Region as well as a lay member of the Diocesan Standing Committee. Here at St. Peter’s, she also leads the Parish Life/Hospitality Team, is a lay eucharistic minister and hardly ever says no when asked to help. Professionally, Jan has extensive experience in radiation health physics and is still active as a consultant conducting radiation safety training programs for workers and radiation safety officers. She holds a B.S. degree in chemistry from the University of Massachusetts, an M.S. degree in health physics from the University of Rochester, and a Ph.D. in microbiology and environmental health from Colorado State University. She sews, but not as well as Cindy Everett; she sings, but not as well as Jackie and Tom. She has three amazing kids, four even more amazing grandchildren, and two super-spectacular great-grandchildren.

  • Deborah Smith | Treasurer

I have been a member at St. Peter’s since 2019, having fallen in love with the parish when attending the Annual Women’s Retreat at St. Benedict’s Monastery earlier that year. Previously I attended Christ Church in Aspen where I served on the vestry and in other capacities. Semi-retired, I work part-time for a spa and hospitality industry consultancy. I am passionate about nature and outdoor recreation, history, and Christian contemplative practice. I am an advocate of continued adult faith formation efforts and innovative ways to share our experience and love of God with others. In 2022 I was elected to serve on the Diocesan Board of Directors for Cathedral Ridge Camp & Retreat. It is an honor to serve alongside Reverend Wendy and my fellow vestry members.

  • Tom Kenning | Vestry Member

Tom Kenning has been an Episcopalian since 1990 and a member of St. Peter’s since 2010. Prior to that he was a member of St. John’s in Ouray. He was a member of the Diocesan Standing Committee from 1998 to 2001. For the past seven years Tom has been the Chief Administration Officer of Alpine Bank. He has an accounting degree from Colorado State University and a graduate degree in banking from the Pacific Coast Banking School at the University of Washington. He has been married to Tammy for 38 years and has two sons and two grandsons, both of whom were baptized at St. Peter’s. He’s not as good a fisherman as Rick Lofaro or Andy Thomas, and he’s not as good a skier as Steve Rausch or as good a golfer as Bill Shiflet, but he likes to do all those things.

  • Karin Bannerot | Vestry Member

Karin Bannerot joined St. Peter's in 2001. She currently serves on the Altar Guild, is a lay eucharistic minister, and assists with the Yoga Prayer ministry. She also enjoys helping with Extended Table and Garden Committee projects. The Outdoor Chapel was inspired by her dad, the Rev. Fred G. Bannerot III, who served as an Episcopal priest in West Virginia, and her mom, Jutta Bannerot. Both parents helped form Karin's love of the Church as well as quiet, outdoor beauty. Karin has been a nurse for over 40 years, and despite trying to practice retirement, she continues to work as a child care consultant. She is also a Certified Addiction Specialist in private practice, and a grateful member of 12-Step programs. Her activities include pickleball, biking and hiking. Being a member and serving at St. Peter's keeps her Teachable, Leaning into God, and Connected (TLC).
